Okay, so what does that cover? Because in our preparation for this interview, you talked about the amount of manipulation training that chiropractors get versus MDs. And that’s, and we’re going to get into that in a little bit here, the difference between the two and the animosity between the two, which is still bewildering to me. But let’s talk about what kind of training you have in terms of the manipulation.
Ken Frederick – Chiropractor – Port Orchard, Washington
Well, seven quarters, the second-half of the curriculum is all dedicated to learning the art and the philosophy. To us, the adjustment is sacred. It is not easy. Everything is done with purpose. Everything is done with calculation. There are no mistakes.
You touched on the medical schools. Our education has a lot of medical teaching in it. And the reason for that was the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, they knew that when we were practicing, we would be introduced as Dr. So-and-so. And the other party would say, oh, well, what kind of doctor are you? And we’d say, I am a Doctor of Chiropractic. And then the most common response to that is, oh, well, then you’re not a real doctor.
So, the answer to that was, then you’re going to know everything a medical doctor does when they graduate med school. So yes, we spend a lot of time learning all the different diseases. We learn how to draw blood. We grow bacteria cultures and learn how to identify them. All those things in themselves we’ll never do as chiropractors, but we know how and we know what they are.
And in a roundabout way, it helps us understand some things that a person may come to us for help, but we know it’s something that we need to refer them to their primary MD or a specialist of some sort.
